xAI announces the company
The company chronology dates its public announcement to 12 July 2023. This is the public introduction, distinct from the earlier start of corporate operations.
xAI introduced Grok as an early chatbot prototype and offered limited access to users in the United States. The announcement acknowledged that the system could produce false or contradictory information.
xAI released the base weights and architecture of Grok-1 under the Apache 2.0 licence. It specified that this was the base model, rather than a model fine-tuned for dialogue.
The company announced a USD 6 billion round to support infrastructure, product development and research. The financing announcement did not establish a personal wealth figure for Musk.
xAI announced an early preview of Grok 3 and associated reasoning capabilities. The announcement presented the developer's own evaluation of the model, rather than independent validation of its accuracy.
X and the AI business combine under one holding company
SpaceX later reported that X.AI Holdings acquired X Holdings and the AI operating company on 28 March 2025. Both became wholly owned subsidiaries of that holding company.
xAI announced Grok 4 for paid consumer plans and its API, alongside a higher-tier offering called Grok 4 Heavy. Availability and model branding are distinct from verified superiority over competing systems.
xAI announced completion of a USD 20 billion funding round. The amount reported as raised exceeded the USD 15 billion target mentioned in the announcement.
The UK regulator opened an investigation into X over reports of Grok-generated sexualised imagery. It examined whether X met statutory duties to protect people from illegal content and children from harmful content. Opening the inquiry did not establish a breach.
Ofcom said X had announced measures intended to prevent Grok from creating intimate images of real people. The regulator said its investigation was continuing and that it was assessing whether those changes adequately protected users.
The European Commission opens a Grok investigation
The Commission opened a Digital Services Act investigation into whether X had properly assessed and mitigated risks from deploying Grok, including risks involving illegal images. The announcement describes a regulatory inquiry, not a final liability finding.
xAI announced that it had joined SpaceX. SpaceX's subsequent financial filing records completion of the acquisition on 2 February 2026, after the earlier combination of xAI and X.
Canada finds privacy violations and records company objections
Canada's Privacy Commissioner found that X Corp. and X.AI LLC had not obtained valid consent for generating sexualised deepfakes. The companies disagreed with the conclusions and described safeguards and remedial action. The Commissioner treated the matter as well-founded but unresolved and said implementation of commitments would be monitored.
SpaceXSI introduced Grok Bot, describing agents with their own cloud computer and access to connected tools. The announcement offered beta access through selected Grok and Cursor plans. Its descriptions of autonomous work are company claims, not a guarantee that the system completes every task safely.
SpaceX's quarterly filing records closing of its acquisition of Cursor on 14 August, following an agreement signed on 16 June. Its Super Intelligence segment includes Cursor as well as Grok and X.
The company announced Grok 4.7 and described access through Cursor, Grok Build and its API. The release is recorded as a product milestone without adopting the company's benchmark rankings as independently established facts.
SpaceXSI announced The X Subscription, bringing Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium into one plan. It said new customers could subscribe that day while existing-account migration would roll out. A shared subscription does not erase the separate identities of these products.
Ofcom narrows part of its inquiry but keeps the illegal-content investigation open
Ofcom said it would not take forward specified child-risk, safety and reporting duties at that time after X changed an age-gating issue not directly related to the Grok reports. It made no findings on those duties and reserved the option to revisit them. The investigation into illegal-content duties remained open.
SpaceXSI announced its next speech-to-speech model, Grok Voice 3.0, and said it was available through its API. The release is recorded without adopting its performance rankings or cost comparisons as independent findings.
