How the FTC privacy order against Meta unfolded

The FTC alleged in 2019 that Facebook violated a 2012 FTC order by deceiving users about their ability to control the privacy of their information. In 2023 the FTC alleged that an independent assessor found gaps and weaknesses in Facebook's privacy program under the 2020 order and that Facebook misrepresented parental controls in Messenger Kids, and it proposed tightening the order.
