Minneapolis 911 received a report that a customer had tried to use a counterfeit 20 dollar bill at Cup Foods, according to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
George Floyd died on 25 May 2020 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck during an arrest over a suspected counterfeit bill. Three other former officers were convicted in federal court and pleaded guilty or were found guilty in state court.

His appeal to the Minnesota Court of Appeals against the May 2026 denial of a postconviction petition and a third petition filed in August 2026 are pending, according to MPR News and Fox News.
Minneapolis 911 received a report that a customer had tried to use a counterfeit 20 dollar bill at Cup Foods, according to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
Officers J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane arrived and found George Floyd in a parked car near the store, the appeals court said.
Four officers forced Floyd into a prone position, and Derek Chauvin pressed one knee into his neck and the other into his back, according to the appeals court. It said the prone restraint lasted about nine minutes and 29 seconds.
Kueng said he could not find a pulse, and Chauvin did not lift his knee, the appeals court said. It found Floyd had stopped speaking about four minutes and 45 seconds into the restraint and became unresponsive about 53 seconds later.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner recorded the time of death as 9:25 p.m. at the Hennepin Healthcare emergency room in Minneapolis.
The medical examiner gave the cause of death as cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression, and the manner as homicide. The report listed heart disease, fentanyl intoxication and recent methamphetamine use as other significant conditions, and said manner of death is not a legal finding of culpability.
The trial in Hennepin County District Court began on 8 March 2021 and jury selection started the next day, according to the appeals court. Chauvin faced charges of second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter.
The jury found Chauvin guilty of second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. The court entered a conviction and sentenced him only on the second degree murder count. The Attorney General's Office said the third degree murder verdict was later vacated after a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling on that law.
A federal grand jury indictment, unsealed on 7 May 2021, charged Chauvin with using unreasonable force, Kueng and Tou Thao with failing to intervene, and all four with failing to give medical aid. A separate indictment charged Chauvin over the 2017 restraint of a 14 year old. All were presumed innocent.
Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Chauvin to 270 months in prison on the second degree murder count, an upward departure from the state sentencing guidelines, with 199 days of credit.
Chauvin changed his plea to guilty in federal court in Minnesota, Reuters reported. The Justice Department said he admitted depriving Floyd and the 14 year old of their constitutional rights.
After a trial of nearly five weeks in St. Paul, a federal jury found all three former officers guilty of failing to give Floyd medical aid, and Kueng and Thao also guilty of failing to intervene, the Justice Department said.
Lane pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second degree manslaughter, and the state dropped the murder charge against him, the Minnesota Attorney General's Office said.
A federal judge sentenced Chauvin to 252 months in prison, the Justice Department said. CNN reported the term was reduced by seven months for time served, leaving 245 months, and that prosecutors asked for it to run concurrently with the state sentence.
Lane was sentenced to 30 months in prison and two years of supervised release, the Justice Department said.
Kueng was sentenced to 36 months and Thao to 42 months in federal prison for their February 2022 convictions, the Minnesota Attorney General's Office said. AP also reported the three and three and a half year terms.

Kueng was sentenced to three and a half years for aiding and abetting second degree manslaughter, to run concurrently with his federal sentence, ABC News reported.
A three judge panel in an opinion by Judge Reyes, joined by Judges Larson and Klaphake, rejected all of Chauvin's arguments and affirmed the second degree murder conviction and the 270 month sentence.
Judge Cahill found Thao guilty of aiding and abetting second degree manslaughter after the stipulated evidence trial, in a ruling filed on 1 May 2023 and released the next day, AP reported. Sahan Journal also reported the verdict.
The Minnesota Supreme Court denied Chauvin's petition for review of the appeals court decision in a one page order, AP reported. Chauvin's later court filing gives the same date.

The US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin's appeal of his state murder conviction without giving reasons, AP reported. His later filing gives the same date.
Chauvin was stabbed 22 times in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, ABC News reported. Reuters reported that prosecutors said he was stabbed about 22 times. Officials said he was stable and expected to recover, ABC reported.
The Justice Department charged a fellow inmate with attempted murder and assault offences over the attack, Reuters and ABC News reported.
The US Supreme Court declined to review Thao's federal civil rights conviction, AP reported. AP said Chauvin was separately challenging his federal conviction.
Chauvin filed a petition for postconviction relief in Hennepin County District Court and asked for leave to amend it, according to his later filing. MPR News reported that a petition filed in late 2024 was rejected.
The district court dismissed the petition without prejudice to refiling within the time allowed by law, according to Chauvin's later filing.
Chauvin filed a new petition asking the court to vacate his sentence and order a new trial. He argued that the state's medical experts gave opinions without foundation and that police supervisors gave false testimony about training.
Hennepin County Judge Paul Scoggin denied the petition, MPR News reported. Fox News reported that the 41 page order, dated 1 May, found the claims barred because they were or could have been raised earlier.
Chauvin's lawyer Gregory Joseph filed an appeal of the denial on 29 June, Fox News reported. MPR News reported that the appeal was filed with the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
Chauvin filed a third petition asking the court to vacate the conviction and dismiss the charges, MPR News reported. It argued that the governor's assignment of Attorney General Keith Ellison to prosecute was illegitimate and that no grand jury had been convened.
